If you find yourself waiting on the mainland for that coveted permit to Sipadan while in Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia, check out the very FIRST and ONLY Proboscis Monkey and Wildlife River Cruise (in Semporna) not far away!

If the idea of cruising along a meandering river and catching glimpses of Proboscis Monkeys, crocodiles, giant fruit bats, scores of fireflies and other creatures sounds exciting to you, then you should not miss the maiden Borneo Semporna Proboscis River Cruise, Only In SEMPORNA

The tour party will leave Semporna at 3.30pm for a 25-minute ride to the Borneo Semporna Proboscis River Cruise Centre in Kampung Tunggulangan.

On arrival, a walk along a 150-meter wooden bridge will lead to the centre where visitors can watch and feed the long-tailed macaques with guavas and bread at 4pm.

There is a tower for bird watching and you can expect to sight horn bills, kingfishers and other species.
Enjoy a hi-tea of traditional Malay snacks and drinks while appreciating pristine rainforest ambience and fresh air in their restaurant. We also will be having reflexology sessions in the future.

The centre, which is equipped with wooden picnic tables and benches and eight washrooms.

By 5pm, the boat will leave the centre for the hour-long cruise along Sungai Buaya and Sungai Pegagau.

It is a great way to experience nature's sight and sound in the tranquil living environment of a diversity of riverine wildlife, especially Proboscis Monkeys, Long Tail Macaque, Pig Tail Macaque, Giant Fruit Bats, Crocodiles and birds.

Back to the centre, a delicious BBQ seafood buffet dinner will be served. It is also a place for you to spend your evening in the wetland.

By 7pm, enjoy the magical sight of fireflies lighting up and decorating the mangroves.

Please reply for more details!

Why are you feeding wild monkeys? Do you know how aggressive and obnoxious they will become after doing this for a while?

It is ridiculous for a tour operator to promote that kind of behavior. I've seen what the macaques in Sabah behave like when they are used to people feeding them. NOT GOOD!!!!!

BTW, who are you respresenting, kurry?

Hi Kurry, my son did get bitten by a macaque in Sabah a few years back.
We are going to be in Semporna, unfortunately, our flight leaves in the evening, so we will not have time for the cruise. Yet, we need a place to hang out after a week of diving on a liveaboard in Sipadan. We deboard at 9 a.m. and our plane leaves at 6 p.m., where do you recommend for us to hang out and chill while we wait for our plane? Appreciate the recommendatins

Midget, thank you for your concern. I have actually talked to the owner about that and I believe they are working on that to make it less threatening to the tourists. I know that once the damage is done, it's hard to reverse! Any suggestions? I am not representing anyone and just wanted to help promote something that I really enjoyed doing while over there!

Hockeydad, there is not a lot to do around Semporna, unless walking around town is your idea of fun, although it can be a very educational experience. I, personally love experiencing it all. Bukit Tengkorak, also know as Skull Hill (not that there are skulls there) is a cool place to climb and then see all of Semporna. You would have to hire a taxi or lorry to get you there though.
If Semporna is not your cup of tea, I'd suggest heading into Tawau early and walking around there. The Tawau Hills Park or Bukit Gemok is a cool place to go to if you have time. There are also some open markets there too, such as the Indo market (a bit ironic....), but you can get souvenirs there and bargain.

Kurry, thanks for clarifying that. I think BGB started that up, didn't they?

Feeding macaques is all fun & games until they start associating humans with food and become aggressive. They are wild animals. Once the behavior is changed, there is no going back. Your friend the irresponsible tour operator would be wise to immediately cease his feeding wild animals. It is in his best interest to do so. Once the monkeys become aggressive, he can no longer safely take tourists to that spot.

I agree. Macaques are basically a$$holes. Really. It's all about pecking order. They're constantly in a struggle to move up. You can tell the leader....the big fat male. He's the worst.
Don't feed them and if they act aggressive, you just act MORE aggressive.
I had a female that someone was mistreating in the Philippines. I got her young and kept her for 7 years. She was great when she was young. And she always accepted me as the dominant male. But as she got older she tried to establish herself as the dominant female at the expense of my wife and kids. We had to keep her tied up after that. (cloth around her waist and a long bamboo pole to run on in a tree)
