I have a rather unusual problem with equalizing. I can equalize my ears with little effort (valsalva) on the first dive, or after a surface interval. However, when I ascend either to the surface or near the surface, and try to immediately descend, I have trouble equalizing again. This is particularly a problem with teaching as I have to perform a CESA individually with each student, etc.

All the instructors I have spoken to have not seen this before - normally either you can equalize or you can't. For me, after a 30-60 minute surface interval, I'm fine. It's just the short or zero surface intervals that cause me problems equalizing.

Can anyone shed light on why I might experience this and ways to fix it?

Thanks.
