I'm doing the OW Cert with my Son, 13 years old, in a couple of weeks. My daughter is too young to do this by 5 months.

I see quite a few folks on here from the Orlando area. Can anyone recommend or know where I might possibly be able to get private instruction for my daughter to give her a lot of pool time prior to her taking her OW Cert when she is old enough.

I'd like to get some feedback before I start trolling through all the LDS's in my area.

Thanks
Chris Edwards.

Might want to ask GDI on this board for a reference. I think he is more or less in your area but may be further than you want to drive.

I don't know what agency you're certifying with, but PADI doesn't allow pool training until the student diver is 10. I'm not sure what the other agency standards are, but they're likely similar, so getting her into the pool with scuba gear won't happen. The best thing is to just get her in the water with a mask, snorkel and fins over the next 5 months and have her read the material and complete the lessons. It's a lot of information for a 10 year old and the extra time will help her, especially the tables.

Naui, where I'm doing the class with my Son, requires a child to be 12 years old. My daughter's 11 1/2, 12 in February (Aquarius).

She could snorkel before she could swim, at the age of 4. With her face in the water, she didn't realize she was just floating around on the top of the water, with a mask and snorkel. She'd spend hours just swimming backwards and forwards, starring at the bottom of our pool.

Thanks

I'm an SSI instructor in Lakeland. One option would be to get your daughter into Scuba Rangers, an SSI program for 8-12 year olds. They use regular scuba equipment (with small cylinders) and learn all of the open water skills, just in a swimming pool. There are levels of advancement and the program stresses ecology as well as diving. It can be a great springboard to open water diving. We had our son do this at age 8 while his sister was getting certified at age 12. That way he was involved. After two years, he flew through his junior open water certification at age 10, the youngest age allowed by SSI. I don't know what SSI shops have Scuba Rangers in the Orlando area but your daughter would be welcome in our shop's program. If interested, call TJ (the owner) of Off the Wall Adventures at 863-709-9253.

Yeah, dayo does it all. SDI, PADI, etc. I know Tom personally and HE IS GREAT WITH KIDS. PADI and SDI only require the child to be 10yrs old for Jr cert. My son is going to his class next month, my brther in laws son just trained with him and he's 11

There are a couple instructors I can think of on the board *close* to your area. NetDoc, and Walter. While I've never done classes with either, I've dove with both, and have had conversations with both as well as knowing them on the board. I'd say either would make a great choice regardless of what agency they work with. I think they may be both NAUI.

If you want to send them a PM, do an advanced search on those user names, and you should find them easily. Both post on the Conch forum on a regular basis, and in other area's as well.
