I am visiting Grand Cayman for the first time. I am wondering if there are any private guides for hire. I am a fairly new diver and hate chasing after dive masters on tour dives....still do not feel confident enough to stray too far away from them either. The most enjoyable dives have been those with a hired dive master as my dive partner. Any suggestions or referrals?

Not wanting to steal and thread but how much would it cost for a DM for day? I thinking about Caymans also for my first adventure into the ocean diving.

CWSWine....steal away. No worries at all from one Kansas to another! Born and raised in Topeka!

You can always hire a DM to dive with you for a day or whatever and be your private guide. I am not aware of anyone who specializes in private guiding.

So..having never done that before, how would I go about doing that?

Just phone one of the larger dive operators here (the smaller ones may not have anyone they can spare). For example, Don Foster's will provide you with a DM private guide for the day for $90 US.

It is a very quiet time of year down here and so you will probably not have any trouble finding a dive outfit with a "spare" dive instructor.
You could start off with a private guided shore dive to get your confidence levels up and then I recommend you dive with one of the small group operations on the island..at this time of year this will almost equate to a private guide for no extra cost! The small group operations are geared up to provide high levels of care and service and you will never get lost in the crowd.
The list of operations is long....Deep Blue Divers, Off the Wall Divers, Indigo, Dive'n'Stuff, Neptune's and of course Wall to Wall Diving to name but a few.
Hope this helps.
