Blackwood:
Same is true with most any weights. Go into a gym and pick up a dumbell labeled 50 pounds. It probably weighs more like 49.

I could live with only a 2% error. ;)

I have one two-pounder of unknown mfr., actual weight 33.6 oz. (+5%)

and four one-pound Sea Pearls that weigh 16.3, 16.4, 16.5, and 16.5 oz's. (+1.875% to +3.125%)

I also have some five-pounders, but our postage scale only goes up to 3 pounds. Sorry.

I had no idea weights would be so far off. I have made a lot my own soft weights and was a little worried about the weight being 1/2 ounce off. Guess I shouldn't have been so hard on myself!

Geeeeezzzzzzzzz, Mike !!!!

Now there's something else I feel compelled to do when I get home this afternoon! :05:

the K

Come on, Kraken, where are you? Didn't let family, dinner, or TV get in the way of something remotely dive related, did ya? ;)

What I meant to say was, regardless of the numbers stamped on the weights, find the right collection of blocks that works for you, in the equipment and environment that you will dive in. (Ain't gonna work in Cuba if they keep snatching your weightbelt admittedly!) At work we have crates full of weights and the difference in thicknesses (and probably densities) is vast, we probably have weights for every half ounce from 1 to 6lbs. Newer weights are also lighter than older ones. Soon a 2lb weight will only weigh 1.5lbs!

Our Sar team makes its own weights out of tire weights.. when I first set up my weight belt with what I was used to useing (30lbs) I found that I coulndt sink for the life of me. Baffled I kept adding weight till I got to what I THOUGHT was 40lbs. 8 five pounders, I just couldnt blive that it would take me more weight to get under in the local freshwater than I had used in previous saltwater dives, to make a long story shorter, I weighed them on my home scale and came up with 32lbs Made me feel a little better :)
i dont really care what they weigh, but every weight you put on a belt shortens it and when you have to buy a longer belt because you dont have the room. something just aint right :D

miketsp:
I found that our 2kg weights varied from 1.6kg to 2,2kg and none of our 3kg weights weighed more than 2.6kg.

When I read the title of this thread I estimated a tolerance of 20%. Your results are within that tolerance. Making weights with tighter tolerances takes longer -- you generally have to weigh them individually and tweak them. That makes them more expensive. It's not worth it.

ok, my bouyancy sucks, but now i know who to BLAME!!!
