Possible move to Columbus, OH

Before making a big decision like this, I need some help from the locals. I'm wanting some info on the local diving in/around the area. I know a little about OH, but not much about diving in the area. Any help or links that you could provide would be welcomed. I know that a dry suit is almost required, but other than that I don't know anything else.

Well, Adam, I am not sure about your body tolerance, but a dry suit certainly is NOT required. I dove in Lake Huron with a boat load of 12 and over half dove wet. In fact, the quarry temps are still very comfortable in the mid 70's and drop to, perhaps, mid 60's at the thermocline.

Aside from Lake Erie, Ohio has mostly quarry diving. Here are a few links to some....

Again, these are just a few. Columbus has many awesome dive shops, clubs, owners, etc...too--Including a brand new, state of the art dive shop/pool in the west/north west side of town called Aquatic Adventures of Ohio.

Not only do we have some really nice sites that are local you're only about a 10-13 hour drive from Tobermory, Ontario; the outer banks and northern Florida.

Shipwreck Diving - Osprey Charters

A little bit of a hike from Columbus, but perfect for a weekend trip.

Best charter I have found on Lake Erie. Incredible wrecks, good dive boat, friendly & knowledgeable captain.

FYI - COLD water. Bottom temps often range from high 30s to mid 40s on the deeper wrecks.

There are several clubs in Columbus. Pick one that suits your character and diving preferences.

Diving the deeper Great Lakes wrecks is much more comfortable with a drysuit. The quarries are at their prettiest when covered in ice and the dry suit comes in real handy for that. Still, you can do a whole lot of diving with a nice wetsuit.

Travel is the name of the game when you get tired of the quarries. Our club, the Buckeye Divers, likes wreck diving and usually goes to Florida for Memorial Day, North Carolina for the 4th, and Canada for Labor Day. Lately we've been sneaking in a warm water trip every year too. Other clubs in town tend to travel for cave or reef diving.

Actually many of our members are members of other clubs. The goal of the regional forums is to meet "local" divers AND help people out who are coming to the area. You've done that admirably
