Anyone have a definitive way to interpret Poseidon serial numbers to determine age of a reg? I have the regs below and would like to know when they where made. The 3960s are probably 1996? Not sure about the old 300.

I would say that the 3960 definitely dates from 1996; and that 2980, from the early to mid-1970s. I have a couple of Cyklon 300s (2940 and 2989s) within that broader range of serial numbers; and one of them was purchased, new, in 1976. Sorry that I couldn't be any more precise.

On the bright side, rebuild kits are still available for the 300s . . .

Thanks for your help. I know the exact date on the 300 ends in “3” likely. Rebuilt kit is #3884 but will also need adaptors for hose ports which is a pain in the ass.

Jumping in on this out of curiosity (and the chance to post some pics). I have a new-old-stock Poseidon Cyklon Super 300 that I picked up many years ago. It is still unused in the original box. The serial number on the first stage is 37016. The extra gasket unit included carries a date of 1976, though the regulator may have been made later. This was a nostalgia purchase, because this was the first reg I ever owned and came in the exact same packaging in 1980 when I bought it. Does anybody know the difference between a regular 300 and a "super" 300, or was that just marketing?

Very nice!

It was my first regulator as well -- and I've since purchased a few "old stock" 300s over the years, for their quality and simplicity; and would suggest that your 300 was indeed from 1976. I still have one in my last minute dive kit, in my truck; and still others on ponies and stage bottles.

The Cyklon first began as the "Junior" in 1958, credited as being the first single hose regulator; the "Sport" in 1962, had a few more outlets (the first model had a single LP port, nothing else, well before the use of an SPG); the "Super" in 1972, was the first 300 bar regulator; and the "300" by 1985, which marked the first use of a polymer second stage -- and was eventually discontinued by 1993 and replaced by the Cyklon 5000.

The only differences between the "Super" and the "300" were its dates of manufacture; otherwise, they are identical . . .
