I was wondering if anybody has ever used a Poseidon BC before. One of the dive shops here sells them and I haven't talked to many people that know too much about them.

Can anybody give me any info, review links, opinions on these BC's

I think expensive is a relative term. Can you clarify that? How much would you consider expenseive for a Poseidon Jacket and Poseidon Backfill?

If I can get a deal are they worth using?

I saw one once for $1200 Canadian ($800 US? or so). Having used a back plate and wing I just laughed at the idea of spending so much for a "tech" BC. To each his own, but I haven't looked back yet.

Good luck.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance and inexperience.

What is a backplate and wings? Is there a good SCUBA glossary website? Do you know of any links?

Sorry, I tend to assume too much sometimes.

There's been a lot of discussions on this board about back plates (BP) and wings (back inflated BC), so go surfin' and see if you can find them. I'm not going to get into the details of it all since you can read about it from authors better than I.

Here's a few links to get you started.

http://www.gue.com -- Read equipment section.
http://www.wkpp.org -- Read equipment section and pics.
http://www.sfdj.com/dive/dir1.htm -- Download both DIR 1 and DIR 3. This is good stuff.
http://wrolf.net/index.html -- Scroll down and read all the hogarthian and DIR stuff.
http://www.sfdj.com/dive/dir1.htm -- DIR shop.

The topic of DIR tends to get heated on some boards -- mostly people feeding their own ego's (on both sides of the issue). When reading, just remember it's the substance that counts not the presentation. The guys who "founded" and refined the DIR stuff above are the best of the best among technical divers and there is no disputing this fact. No one has come close to their accomplishments, so you have to ask youself: if it's good enough for them, is it good enough for me? My answer was of course yes, but you can decide for yourself.

There, that my DIR speal for the week. Good luck.

Mike

Any questions, just fire away.
