Ok, I know you have to expect what you pay for, but the $29.95 POS compass that fits my console has about 0.0001 degrees of tilt tolerance and I hate it. Is the $100.00 Suunto SK7 the only way to go or are there good mid-priced compasses available?

So, the questions are:

if you were on a budget (need to buy other scuba stuff too), what compass would you buy?

if money were no object, which compass would you buy?

Thanks.

Various on line retailers sell just the compass module for $35.

Thanks for the quick reply, Tobin. It looks like the Sherwood and Oceanic have the most tilt tolerance for the price, but are they any good?

FWIW, my AOW instructor suggested that the wrist mount was the least accurate way to shoot a heading. I supposed your mount could be clipped on a D-ring just as easily. :)

My compasses are all wrist mounted and with a little practice are easy to use.

I've been diving the Oceanic compass for about 6 weeks. Seems to work like, ah well, a magnetic compass.

Tobin, do you know if any of the modules that are known to fit your mount are NOT region-weighted like the SK7? Thanks

We make the mount, not the compass. I'd suggest if you have instrument specific questions that you research the instrument.

IIRC Scuba.com sells a bunch of them and has a description of each.

(some think the earths magnetic poles are about switch anyway so it may not matter:wink:)

I went with a $30 SK-7 and it definitely performs better than the pack. But that will take some time and shopping effort. I found mine, new, on ebay.

Got my SK-7 from a local dive shop for $75 .. it was in the wrist boot

I hear that Oceanic's compass now has a large tilt angle, I just don't/did not like their pointer

The Sherwood console that I passed down for my daughter to use has a pretty good compass in it. I never had much complaint about it, but the SK7 I use now is a lot better.

There's nothing "hard" about using a wrist mount, it's just a little bit different.

I'vre got an Oceanic wrist one, which the missus uses, and one in the triple console they do. Both seem fine. In truth though I've used a few whilst training and not found a bad one. Who's is it you're not happy with?
