The primary difference between all the less expensive hoses and the hoses that are used in diving umbilicals is that diving umbilicals have a "star" shaped cross-section that prevents them from cutting off your air if they kink. You can, under some circumstances, get away with things as foolish as garden hose.
 
Never use regular hose for diving they could have bad chemicals in them. Any of the hose manufactures and hose shops sell BA hose that means breathing air. It's a little more expensive but worth it. Keane engineering sells yellow floating BA hose. Just make sure it's rated BA hose.
