First of all, thank you to everyone for the tips on where to try. Out of respect for those who shared, I won't say where we went but we had a great time. The poor kid went from 6 months skindiving in the Bahamas to 55 degree water (which was downright hot to me). First stop we made was about 25', sandy, lots of sand dollars so we moved about a 1/2 mile further down where we found the bottom covered in 18" rocks. No holes big enough to hold a legal bug but we did see a very large tautog, a skate and other small fish. I lost my flashlight towards the end but realized too late to go back looking. As my nephew was getting in the boat he took his tickle stick off his wrist and dropped it. Two offerings to the sea gods.
Second dive was further SE in 15-40' of water. Lots of huge boulders with nice big holes but it almost looked like someone had been there already. Every "perfect" hole was empty. Managed to get 1 legal bug and saw at least 40 shorts. My nephew got to practice his technique on what turned out to be a few "1 molt away from legal" bugs. Wind really picked up so we were very glad to have someone in the boat to come grab us.
Overall, a wonderful day and I am looking forward to taking him to my area soon.
