Yes, thats very true in Norway. But finnish leisure divers have been searched and recovered some dead divers from cove a few times more in the past. And in Finland, these operations are managed by local police. And with close co-operation with all authorities was very good.

Google Translate

Seems to be an indication that police "foot dragging" was getting to the point where civilians felt that they needed to take things into their own hands.

I'm not familiar with this cave system but if authorities don't take the needs of the families seriously then it doesn't surprise me at all that they are cut out of the loop.

R..

The news just updated and apparently there was something like 17 people involved in the recovery - as far as is known at this time all of them finnish..

I read the same... 17 people with dive gear are not easy to hide!

I understand the ban at the time, but after they failed to recover the bodies, the ban could not be enforced for ever. Either there were plans to try again and the scene should be preserved or they should open it and give instructions to those diving there on what to do in case they managed to bring the bodies up.

I think it's very natural that friends of the victims and the divine community wanted to get them out of the cave. And they did so at their own risk. I don't condemn that. People are comparing this to what happened after the war. I think Finland was the only country who brought back all its dead soldiers, a task that ended only in the 90's.

Up there, you could probably hide a whole frikkin' Army battalion without too much trouble. It's pretty desolate, just check the area on Google Earth.

Me neither. Nor do the spokespersons for the cave diving Association. However, I can still understand that the police seem a little peeved. After all, they had imposed a ban on diving there.

And I do believe that if something had gone terribly wrong this time, too, there would have been a bit of a stir...

EDIT: On the radio news just now, the spokesperson from the Norwegian Cave Diving Association claimed that the divers who found the passage between Plura and Steinugleflåget were among the persons who now have recovered the bodies. IIRC, that would be people from the Divers of the Dark team.

EDIT2: I saw a pretty good comment to the operation, on the Finnish Broadcasting Company's article:
Nu då det gick bra konstaterar alla att "wau, bra gjort", om det resulterat i ett par döda till hade projektet blivit idiotförklarat. Linjen mellan hjältemod och galenskap är tunn och kan oftast bedömas först i efterhand. Skönt för de anhöriga.

(Now that things went OK, everybody concludes "well done", if there'd been a couple more dead, the project would have been declared insane. The border between heroism and madness is thin and can only be assessed in retrospect. Good for the families.)

Finns are, generally speaking, utterly insane. And here's an oppty to show the Norwegians as chickens to boot.

"We will fix this problem so your precious cave doesn't get closed forever..."

I'm surprised they didn't replace the bodies with mannequins draped in Norwegian flags.

Although the problem was caused by finns in the first place..
Probably due to lack of on-site saunas...

Sorry, bad english. But I´m so proud about the finish divers. They did an very difficult and dangerous dive and they get up our dead diverfriends. Just now I don´t think, was it some sain to to it. The did it because, they thought it was the only right thing to do. Just, thank you!

Does anyone know what side they went in?

Great news! Must have been a huge effort ! Well done to all involved. Did they perhaps make a video documentary about it ? I am also glad that their families can now get closure. Maybe they will write about the operation.
