Thalassmania-Ballistes polylepis are well known to occur here. I see them regularly at depths greater than about 50 feet and it is in both Randall's and Hoover's books. If you haven't seen one on Kona yet, try looking at the deep part in the reef. I also have a citation from a journal somewhere that mentions B. polylepis in Hawaii.
 
I do not doubt you for a minute. It would be nice to get FISHBASE updated however.
