Please ID this fish seen in Bermuda

We were diving the wreck of Hermes today and spotted this huge fish, the picture doesn't even come close to the true size of this thing no idea what it is.
Please ID it for us.

That's what I thought, but I'm no grouper whiz by a long shot. Here are 2 black grouper (I.D.'d by folks on this forum) for comparison, the first from Costa Maya and looks like yours, the 2'nd from Cozumel and much lighter in coloration/patterning.

They looked in the 3 to 4 foot range to me, but I'm a lousy judge of such things.

definitely the giant black grouper, looks exactly the same as the picture posted by diversteve
never seen one befor3e, that was one big fish

How did you like the Hermes dive??


really liked it, the vis was great too unlike our next stop at the Hangover Hole where it was 30ft at best
