probably do a heap of shallow shore dives and practice the skills you learnt in OW, I am only a beginner but find that UW Photography really takes your mind off everything maybe try that

Thank you again for shared experiences and supportive words.. After reading through your replies I made contact with a scuba organization close to where I live and explained everything to one of the staff via email and have booked a "SCUBA SKILL UPDATE" course (conducted in a heated pool) for the end of next month... The guy I spoke with was very reassuring and suggested that on completion of the course I join a club that go out on easy shore dives weekly...I'm already feeling more confident... It's so weird to be gripped with such all consuming irrational fear and dread over something that was once an escape from such feelings...when I wrote the original post I felt tight chested and anxious just typing the words but I actually feel much better and it helps to know I'm not alone in the experience. ✌️
 
A bit off topic but after laying out for a few months I always like to go someplace with calm, warm water and do some easy, easy dives with NO CAMERA to get back into it before going on a liveaboard or something really "special" where I have spent a lot of money to get to, my expectations are high, and my stress level (and that of my wife) is high as well.

It helps me to get the positive feeling back, not to mention to get the equipment perfect, the safety checks automatic, and the muscle memory back as well. I dislike that feeling of "Where is that damn inflator?"

Hello I'm looking for advice/help... Have been an avid diver for 10+years (rescue cert) 90dives... 3years ago I did a 3fun dives off Phuket and I panicked/ freaked out at the descend on the first dive... Spent the second dive worrying about freaking out again and actually could only enjoy my last dive... Then last week I was in Bali and decided to do a few fun dives... 1st dive freak out... I just panicked and could not get passed it...I did the dive but felt soo anxious the whole time and could not do another dive...I don't know what's wrong with me??... I love diving I love being under water... I don't want to give up something I have truly found so much happiness doing... Can anyone give me any advice or point me in a direction of finding help.... Wahhhh

I totally understand what you are going through I had an issue with my mask in Aruba years ago and freaked, I tried to keep up by taking dive trips once a year and then had a 3 year hiatus as time and finances do not allow opportunities to go diving. I’m doing everything that has been suggested on the board and am looking for a good coach scuba instructor to practice skills in the pool I’m trying to snorkel as much as I can looking tobgetting a CBT therapustbtoo it’s all in your head and it’s a battle you are not alone if any one knows an experienced dive instructor master near Palm Bay or fort pierce Florida I would appreciate it. I miss the wonder beauty the ocean brings and want to get back in good luck
 
One word: pool.

Second word: patient and knowledgeable instructor in the pool. Pay them by the hour. Repeat at your own pace until YOU feel ready.

Then go in a calm ocean with them. Repeat until YOU say you're ready.

I went on most of my husband’s pilot instrument training under the hood and in marine layer into small airstrips and it helped me to focus on my camera :wink:

Do more dives and please go slowly. Try to dive with another diver who is more experienced that you. Go slow, push boundaries gently so that you can back off when needed. If you feel like the situation is causing lots of stress STOP, BREATH, THINK and then ACT.

90 Dives is a lot of dives but over nine years it comes to about 9 dives/year which is not that much. Try to dive more. There is no magic number but if you can try to dive 30-40 dives/year.

Agree with what was said here about staying in the water as much as you can. I am lucky as I have an in ground diving pool so every weekend, religiously, if I am not diving I am under water. It remains familiar. The longest i have gone without diving when I started about 9 years ago is 1 year and when I did the first pool immersion for a tiny split second I flet that strange feeling. It immediately went away. Stay wet !
