Taking a trip late July to somewhere. Think we narrowed it down to PDC or Cozumel bc of the great rates right now from the states. Have 3 divers, 1 non-diving mom, and a 2 year old. Want some really good diving but don't want to be away from Mom and baby all day on dive days. How far are the dive sites from PDC? I've been to Coz, where dive sites are so close and easy and beautiful. But then I was thinking PDC would have more top side for everyone to do. My husband is afraid all the reef structures near PDC will be dead due to tourism, etc. It's so last minute; I would really appreciate any quick input y'all could offer. THANKS!

The coral reefs in Playa del Carmen are in good shape, are full of sea life, and few minutes away by boat. And the cenotes are very accesible from here, from 20 to 45 minutes away. As well as you said, Playa del Carmen has many other activities to offer for non-divers. Enjoy your vacations.

We just got back from our 4th trip to Playa in the last 2.5 years. Really like it there, obviously. The reefs in both are very nice, Playa doesn't have the wall structure that the south end of Coz does but they do have some very nice sites, Jardines, Cerebros, Barracuda, Tortugas, Jason's "secret spot", I've been on them all and have seen big schools of fish, 4 kinds of eels, turtles, pipefish, seahorses, rays, all kinds of fun stuff! As Nicolas mentioned the cenotes are close as well.

This time we came down with me and another diver and two non divers. We dove cenotes the first day and brought the two non divers along, they had a BLAST at Grand Cenote just snorkeling around. It's laid out really well to just hang out and enjoy the water. It's quite shallow in parts. While they did that we went down the road to Temple of Doom, dove there and came back to dive Grand Cenote. The next day we all took the ferry to Coz and dove there, the non-divers hung out and shopped in town then taxi'd it to the dive shop so we could all jump their boat back to the ferry dock. All very painless and we got to spend a lot of time together! The last day we dove Playa, met at Jason's shop at 8:30 and was back to the shop by about 1:00 or so. (Which is typical for Playa sites.) Then met the girls at the beach. It was wonderful! You may be able to shave some time off that because we went to about the furthest site away from Playa for our first dive and had to wait for a diver that never showed.

I always dive w/ Jason "playacountryboy" on the board here. Playa del Carmen Diving, Dive Packages and Fishing in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and the Riviera Maya, Mexico - Fantasea Dive He's a great guide and going to Coz is SO painless with him, on the ferry, hop onto the dive boat, pick up the other group if there is one and hit the dive sites. Lunch included back at their shop then back onto the boat to head to the ferry dock. No screwing around with taxi's or schlepping gear all over town.

Thank you all so much for your input. I am really happy to have more direction. We've been to Coz 3 times before, and we really love it. But I was actually hoping y'all would say some good things about PDC so that we could try it there. Now I gotta work on finding the hotel and then emailing Jason, of course.

We stayed at Aventura Mexicana on Calle 24 between 5th and 10th. Very nice place, Mayan Bistro, on site, was really good! Odd bathroom set up though, its not a separate room and doesn't have a door that closes but is separated from the rest of the room by 3/4 height walls. I booked through their website after emailing Andy and striking a deal with him. It's a lovely hotel and we got a GREAT rate ($50/night and upgraded to their best room) but that bathroom thing might prevent us from staying there again. Another place we considered was Luna Blue, which is one block north of Aventura Mexicana. If you want to stay in town more Hotel La Rana is supposed to be decent, it's on calle 10 between 5th and 10th ave. Next time we head down there, in Nov/Dec we're going to look into staying at Playa Maya, closer to the beach off around calle 6 or 8 but a little pricier.
