I've just come back from 2 weeks in Playa. 18 dives and Rescue Diver certification with SCUBA10. This is a dive shop on 10'th ave that offers the full range of reefs and cenotes. I've dived with these guys before and plan to go back. Very dedicated to good diving practices and a lot of fun. Highlights of the dives were an intense bull shark dive. As soon as we got in the water we saw 4 bulls circling on the bottom. When we got down to 80' they stayed with us for a few minutes then swam off. For the next 20 minutes they came back individually and circled. Saw a huge sting-ray on the bottom as well. Very strong current that took us about a mile in 25 minutes.
Had another dive that seemed pretty ho hum( poor viz and not much life) when 30 squid showed up. Moved pretty slow in one line side by side. I spent about 5 minutes with these weird little guys and got within 20 feet of them.
Did Dos Ojos for the 4'th time. Still an amazing sight.
On my last day of diving I came across a turtle that had a fish hook in it's front flipper and the line attached was snagged on some coral. tried to break the line but couldn't. This is when a knife would come in handy. I broke off the bit of coral it was snagged on but there was still a sinker on the end of the line. I had to bite through line to get the sinker off and the turtle swam up to the surface. Ironic that I completed my Rescue course by rescuing a turtle. Not covered in the textbook but I figured out what to do.
Visibility ranged from so-so 30' to pretty good 70-80'. Not as good as Coz. Best viz was on dive sites south of Playa. Punta Venado, Mama Vina, Barracuda and Sabalos.
Many schools of fish around the Mama Vina. Other divers reported seeing 8 large tarpon at Sabalos. I missed that one. My accommodation was a studio apartment for $50 a night arranged for me Gerardo the dive shop owner. Quiet and close to the shop.
