Only downside is you will have to readjust your tank straps for with and without netting. I never found a real upside so I retired mine. My tanks were not very pretty to begin with.

If you get netting, get the finer version with only about 1/4" holes. It works well to protect your tank and does not bunch up etc. like the larger looser stuff.

You will have to adjust your bands if you go to a bare tank but no big deal.

Just trim the top just below the curve of eh tank as has already been suggested and it should be fine.

Just take your tanks out and roll them around in the gravel for awhile and get it over with. From that point on you will never again have to worry or fret about dinging the paint on your tanks and life will be simpler, happier and much less stressful.

I have a friend who uses the netting just to make his tank easier to pick out of the crowd. They don't look like they could protect your tank from much dammage ...

Are AL tanks painted or anodized? I thought they were anodized, and now I'm confused.

If they are anodized, then stipping will always weaken the tank, no matter who does it.
