I am based in Kota Kinabalu 50% of the time, and do a lot of diving there. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park is pretty good for diving.

Just last week alone, we saw turtles, barracuda, schools of jacks and snappers, all of which are returning to the area.

Some notable sites are:

Pulau Sapi House Reef (turtle, stonefish, cuttlefish)

Pulau Gaya Padang Point (turtle, barracuda, nudis, pipefish)

Pulau Gaya Malahom Bay

Pulau Mamutik Pyramid (lots critters here, and nudis galore)

Edgell's Patches (good deep dive)

Ron's Reef

Sure it's not Sipadan, but it's super convenient as all these sites are within 10-20 minutes speedboat ride from the jetty in town.

Borneo Divers are reputable, but their operations have slowed down somewhat. I personally dive with another LDS/C who offer more personalised service and who know the area intimately. I have my own equipment, but the rental gear on offer is much better than most (Cressi regs and BC's, all well maintained).

I'm in KK quite a lot of the time, so if anyone is going to be in town and looking for a dive, do PM me.... but I'm off to Bali this weekend though!!
