Port Douglas is about 80 kms North of Cairns, and is more of a holiday town, and a heck of a lot smaller than Cairns. There are several day trips running out of there, the best is called Poseidon.

I second what has been said here. Poseiden are an excellent op, and I'll be diving them in August.

For Food in Port douglas, There are plenty of great choices - but I would suggest putting a little extra away and going to Nautilus at least once. One of the coolest and best restaurants I've been to, especially on a warm dry night with the open sky above you :D

Hi wettek
How much is the accomodation over at Gilligans?

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. However, it is brand new, and basically a backpacker accommodation. However, from what I've seen, it's darn nice. You can get all sorts of rooms from multiple beds, to single roms with double beds. There is nothing wrong with Global Palace, as I say, Gilligans is newer, much bigger, awesome pool area, and backs on to the local markets. Great bar too, for those after dive activities!

Just had a quick look on a web site, their prices range from $27 to $92 AUS a night.
Have a look at www.gilligans backpackers.com.au, or just Google Gilligans. It is 1 street back from the middle of town so it's pretty well located.

You've got four full days to poke around Cairns scheduled, and only two out on the boat? I'm not sure you'll need all that much time to explore Cairns, as it is not a huge city, but the beaches near there are first-rate and usually totally uncrowded.

If it's a financial decision, that's understandable, but I'd spend two more days out looking at the Reef if I were you.

you could fly to Sydney or Brisbane and then get a local Virgin Blue (www.virginblue.com.au) flight form there. It's about $150 each way if you book ahead. Sometimes they have specials as low as $50 each way.
