A lot of these places are a bit further out or involve liveabords. For a day trip, go with Deep Sea Divers Den on Reefquest. As far as eating out, Villa Romana. Accomodation, Gilligans.

My wife and I live here in Cairns, and if we were visiting, these would be our choices.

whats the difference between port douglas and cairns? they are both towns right? I was hoping to dive the great barrier reef of the 2 days.

Port Douglas is about 80 kms North of Cairns, and is more of a holiday town, and a heck of a lot smaller than Cairns. There are several day trips running out of there, the best is called Poseidon. It's worth getting up there and heading up to a place called Mossman gorge. Fresh water creek in the mountains, really pretty. Just the drive from Cairns to Port is worth it, a coast road in the early morning looking at the water. Can't beat it.

Best drive on earth, I'd say...I've done it twice and will be counting the minutes till I get back there sometime.

You realize the GBR is the size of Texas, right? So you should probably decide what you want to see first. I did a week on the Spirit of Freedom last fall and loved it. Would go back in a second. It may be too spendy for your budget, though.

How is Queensland and the Reef after the cyclone? I heard it got way up into the Tablelands. So sorry to hear that. We're having tornado troubles here in the southern U.S. lately, so it's a topic near to my heart.

Got a bit of wind in Cairns, only to about 65 mph. About an hour south though, got flogged with 160mph +. Lots of major damage. Haven't been for a dive since, as I came back to work 5 days after the cyclone (work on an oil rig), but I'll be diving out of Port on Poseidon this Thursday, so I'll let you all know. By the way, if anyone is heading up to Port, it's worth driving up in the early morning from Cairns, doing the Poseidon day boat thing and staying at Port the night. Lots of good accom and great restuarants. We recommend "Mango Jam"

thanks everyone for your replies I have narrowed down my options to this
accomodations for 7 nights - global palace
diving - reef quest

Here is an itenarary Im looking at
Sunday - arrival
Monday - going around Cairns
Tuesday - Diving
Wednesday - Diving
Thursday - Trip to Port Douglas
Friday - going around Cairns

How much should I budget for food and transportation everyday? Maybe someone can give me a range of prices of food :) thanks!

by the way, will I have to drive to port douglas? no bus or public transportation? Is it ok that I will only allocate one day for the trip there?
