The Brit gave me a drysuit lesson in the shallow pool, and I'm ready to hit the OW, but I'd sure like to have a friend around for that. Why don't you get your crusty self to FL and dive with me before the weather turns warm?

I miss all of you out there on the Right Coast.

Hope to get some people hired and through training soon so I can get some time off. Over 60% have been screwing up in training and we have to flush them.

Ok, I gotta ask, since i know nothing about drysuits. Why would they be bruised all over from their improv drysuits?

Your body is encased in a sealed bag of air. As you descend, the air compresses. However, the suit will never sit flush against your body perfectly.. it folds. Imagine hooking a very powerful vacuum up to the suit. Where there are the folds in the suit, your skin gets pulled up a bit to try to fill the vacuum in those spots.. so it's like getting big hickies all over your body.

A regular drysuit does this if you don't add gas to make up for that which is compressing. Adding gas also fluffs up the undies so you stay warmer.

Well, the way you avoid it is to add air to the suit as you descend. Watersports (ie kayaking or water rescue) drysuits don't have inflation or deflation valves since they're only used on the surface. They almost invariably also have ankle seals instead of attached boots of some sort.

Ankle seals tend to be very leaky because no one's ankle is all that round. Also, the material is usually a lightweight nylon covered on the inside with a thin layer of urethane, so they're not all that waterproof for long. The more expensive ones are Gore-Tex, which isn't all that waterproof under pressure. You might be able to get away with a good quality Gore-Tex suit if you add valves to it, but then you're looking at spending just as much as a real SCUBA drysuit - Gore-Tex suits tend to start around $600.

They were still on their boat when we did a quickie on the wreck with a short deco, which was more of a safety stop. Around 35 minutes later we are back onboard my boat. It didn’t take long to notice the guys next to us were already undressed and *****ing about their suits screwing up.

We go to a near-by dock to see what I can help them with. Does anyone here watch the “Red Green Show” on PBS? This should have been an episode for the show.

These guys didn’t want to spend the $$ for DIVING dry suits from a shop so they went with water ski dry suits they picked up from a garage sale. They glued on cheap-o rubber boots and proceeded to go diving. Seems the guy they bought the suits from said it would work Ok. Any Eskimo’s out there need ice water?

Both looked like Rand-Mcnally or AAA road maps from all the bruising after making it to around 75’.

There isn't anything wrong with taking a dry suit class or orientation if a diver decided that's the way they want to go. Requiring the card though is bs, IMO.

Fair one! I was just thinking that it would at least mean that everyone were trained to a certain level at least.
