Headed over to Pensacola to do some beach diving with my nephew. My reports are similar to Naitive-Spear-It, so I won't bore you too much with the details.

The dives were a shake-down for me and the nephew who hasn't been diving in over 6 months.

March 30, 2012 - Ft Pickens Jetties

Entered the water very late because of landlubber's obligations, and caught a falling tide (5:45pm). Lots of anglers outside the jetties and a strongish, but manageable current.

Entered the water a little light and had to swap some weights around to get comfortable. Vis was a good 10-15' with lots of freshwater snot from the outgoing tide. Hit the culvert and found a huge school of sheepshead. Swam against the current in about 45' of water chasing flounder, filefish and sheepshead. Water temps were in the low 70's - upper 60's and easy to track my buddy. Diving 72's for about a 30-min dive. Parking had been a problem, but got a spot near the showers.

April 1, 2012 - Destin Jetties
Entered the water a little after 4, did an equipment check and descended down along the rocks to 40 feet. tied the flag off past the metal box and did some shell-finding and swam past the bicycle (It's still there!) and to the corner of the "L" where the incoming current was quite noticeable. Past that I found a baseball, 2 golf balls and a g-string. Water temps were 73, max depth 55', vis was excellent, over 25'. Lots of decorator crabs, what I think were black sea bass, bluefish, filefish, stone crabs, flounder. Dive lasted 47minutes. Then the hellacious walk back to the truck (which was parked near the marina driveway, so not too far from the showers).

Thanks for the report. Although I have been to the Destin jetties many, many times, I have never been to Ft. Pickens. However, your reports support my general impression (from this forum) that visibility usually isn't as good at Ft. Pickens as it is in Destin. Unfortunately, for the first time in about 12 years, I will not be able to make my annual June trip to Destin. I may go in Sept., but the tides are not as favorable then.

Carol - very nice photos. Looks like you saw most of the usual Panhandle jetty suspects, although the "paddle claw" hermit is a new one to me. I used to put my photos on pbase, but I have since switched to flickr because flickr is so much bigger and you get so much more interaction and feedback from others. I only take snorkeling photos. Here are mine from the Panhandle (mostly Destin jetties): Destin Florida snorkeling - a set on Flickr

the "paddle claw" hermit is a new one to me.

Dave, This crab has been tentatively identified as Dimpled Hermit, Pagurus impressus. Paddle claw is just my nickname for it. I am supposed to collect some and send them to a marine biologist in Texas for positive ID. When I saw this one, the only alcohol I had on hand was single malt Scotch, and I wasn't about to waste it on a crustacean. I love your photos on Flickr. You are very knowledgeble, but you may want to check a nice photo of "Spottail Pinfish" that looks like "Silver Porgy" to me. They are very similar, but the spot on the base of the tail is different between the two species.
