Hi all--I'm Maryruth. New to the forum and this thing asked me to say 'meet & greet' or some such blather...so I decided to identify myself as the physically challeged diver that I am. I'm 52. After falling on a dive boat 2 years ago, returning to the mainland (playa del Carmen,) we discovered that I had a massive tumor growing on my spine! The hospital for touristas in Cancun is pretty nice--but really, go ahead and get the FULL DAN coverage--imagine the money we could have saved!!!

Well, after about 90 days in 3 hospitals in 2 countries--the last 45 or so of them at Johns Hopkins where they removed about 90% of the tumor I finally came back to CO and started the long rehab. program to get back to life, art, family (& eventually diving.) I can walk now--mostly with a cane to be safe--but just today did some gardening without the cane--Yeah! I'm from Colorado Springs, CO.

My hubby and I leave for Cozumel for a week of fun in the sun/ fantastic diving next Saturday. I love diving! This will be my 3rd dive trip since the surgery--hooray for rehab! Under the water, I am so free--not worried about foot drops, falling, stumbling--just me and the camera, my buddy and the aquatic life! Gotta love those drift dives though--unless its a strong current and I'm trying to stay still to get a good photo--then I wish I had an anchor! Tally hoe!:D

Welcome! Its wonder to see that you don't let such problems slow you down! Very commendable. Keep on Keeping on!:D I'm hoping later this year to become an instructor to help those with physical disabilities to also be able to enjoy the underwater world.

Welcome to the ScubaBoard! As a Handicapped Scuba Instructor I can appreciate the freedom you feel underwater and the challenges to overcome. Enjoy your life and diving.
