Phuket

I am planning to go to Phuket this October and would appreciate it very much if someone could recommend a place to stay which is reasonably-priced but decent ( preferably with airconditioning ).

Asia Hotels

They sorted me out last year. Depends what you call cheap but I stayed in some pretty nice places for $100 a night - cheap when you live in Japan but that was the top end.

You can find many nice and affordable boutique hotel in the Patong hillside area. Many of those hotels offer free shuttle bus to Patong beach.

Travelem has some good suggestions. These cheap hotels are very nice, clean and spacy. I usually spend at most 1600 for two during high season and get something really nice. Personally I would consider staying out of Patong.
