Hi TX101!
Have you thought about the Similans? If you enjoy diving I think that's a must! I've been there quite a few times and it's so much better to dive there than around Phuket. In Phuket waters are mostly muddy. If you are lucky you can get visibility around 20m but mostly it's below 10m. On the other hand at similans visibility is over 20m everywhere! It can be more than 30m in some places. I've tried a few operators and enjoyed west coast divers most. There are many good liveaboard operators, but for my money it's west coast divers :)

Thanks kapula. I'd love to go to the Similans, but it looks like I'll have to do it from a day boat. I'm used to "UK" vis which is .5-3m so 10m shouldn't be a problem  My wife has dived in the red sea & GBR so it may be a little different for her..

Depending on when you are in Phuket, if I'm not busy in November, let me know via email and I'll come diving with ya!

Thanks thien! I've booked/paid for the flights to Thailand but haven't bought any internal Thai flights yet. I'll be there from the 14th till the 25th of November.

Thanks everyone for all the advice so far!

speaking of internal flight, is it necessary to book in advance from Phuket to Bangkok or Chiang Mai? I have been flying out of Phuket to Bangkok several times from the past, never booked in advance, just walk up to the counter and purchased the ticket.

Regarding domestic flight in Thailand, from BKK to PHK - There are a lot of airlines flying daily, the best rate usually is about 4 weeks in advance. Go to these websites if you like to book online or check the current fares:

http://www.airasia.com (weight limit)
http://www.nokair.co.th
http://www.bangkokair.com (best service)

Other airlines you can also buy over the counter are Orient Thai, Thai Air, and Phuket Airline (this one is having problem lately, so maybe avoid it unless you are desperate).

I don't really buy air ticket weeks in advance, though if you know your trip plan, buy them early for the best fare.

Go diving!

Personally I avoid Bangkok Airways as much as possible.Being 180cm, I find the seat rather uncomfortable. They seem to have the least leg rooms (in comparison to Thai Airways, Phuket Air, never flew Nok Air or Air Asia though) and their price is generally comparable to Thai Airways. Since the flight is not long, it is not unbearable but for the same price, Thai Airways is more comfortable and there is only so much service I need on a short flight. By the way, for around $us40-50 more roundtrip, you can fly business class on Thai Airways. Must be one of the best deal for business class, I think.

I'd highly recommend contacting Sea Bees Kata - www.phuket-scuba.com

They don't have their own boats, so they can book you any place any time. I was very impressed with all the help, advice and friendliness they gave me - both re day trips, live-aboard and accomodation

Enjoy
