I had the privilege to spend a week diving in Oahu, and as usual in that part of the world, lots of really interesting marine animal activity was going on. I wrote a short photo essay about the wrasses and butterflyfish munching on damselfish eggs on Hawaiian reefs (as seen in the shot below). Enjoy!

very nice article and great shots of the wrasses chowing down.....I believe that the hawaiian sergeants are interbreeding with the ind0-pacific sergeants we see here on oahu...do you know if the egg defenses are the same for the two breeds?aloha...peter
 
Interesting essay and as usual, some gorgeous pictures.

It's always a surprise and delight when fish find us interesting. The marine animal that has shown the greatest curiosity with me, though, is the squid. It's almost eerie to see the curious intelligence of a market squid staring into your mask.
