Well, the procedure went well, though I was nervous as hell. My tension apparently caused an irregular heartbeat that would not settle down. So, they knocked me out and zapped me. That steadied it right down and I was awake again as they wheeled me in for the plug.

Certainly felt the tugging and poking in my groin, but no pain. Was not nearly as out of it as I expected, or maybe I was and do not remember much. Whatever, would not know the thing is in there, but I saw it on a freeze frame of an X-ray monitor.

Spent four hours in recovery while the incision and blood pressure were monitored, and then left to come home. Got my marching orders and it is not too bad. Turns out the "no lifting" is for the vein opening to heal, not the heart. Cardiac surgeon said there is not much that could mess up the clamp. Said it sealed up real nice. Diving waits three months if all goes well.

As I had no chest, neck or back pains while recovering, was told it was very unlikely I would get them later. I'll post my experience on the forum Saturation linked, where so many complained of discomfort. As of now, I feel nothing at all different, just a little tender in the groin.

Glad I got it done, but man, was I tense beforehand. Thanks for all the support.

Really glad everything went well for you Lopaka. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a quick return to diving!

Glad everything went well.
Thanks, and getting a "warranty card" with the thing is kinda cool, serial number and everything.

Now, last thing I want to hear about is how recalls are handled..............:shocked2:

I knew you could do it, you old Marine. :) Damn, now there is no keeping you out of the water. I know you were feeling some apprehension over this, as we all would, so this moment has to be such a great relief? Smart man that you had this taken care of.

ALL THE BEST AND SPEEDY RECOVERY, LOPAKA.

Best of luck with the procedure. If you haven't already, you can go to the Amplatzer website, and check out some videos of the procedure. I also wrote an article on PFOs in both Advanced Diver Magazine (November 2007 -- and Underwater Journal around the same time. You can download back issues of Underwater Journal from the website. I'm not sure about Advanced Diver Magazine but it's worth a shot.

Keep us informed as to how it goes.

Doug, (or any other cardiologist)
Thanks for the info. I will get a PFO closure next month. I don't really care too much about the whole procedure. The TEE is not the best of things to look forward to, but then again, after 15=30 minutes its over. So what, big deal.
What DOES make me nervous however is the idea of not diving for several (weeks? months)? What should I expect? Is diving prohibited? for how long? Is there a total restriction or moderate (non-tech, depth limited) diving allowed as time progresses?

I have a diving holiday planned and need to know if (and if so, how far away) I should reschedule it.

Thx,
M
