I've been having low-grade, but relatively persistent lightheadedness for about two months now. There is no spinning sensation, as with vertigo, just a general light/fuzzy feeling all over that persists throughout the day. My GP did blood tests, which came back normal, and I'm wondering if this could possibly be diving-related.

I'm a relatively new diver with about 100 dives in the past two years. My dive profiles are pretty safe (i.e. well within no-deco limits, no long dives > 60', 2-min half stop, 3-min safety stop, slow ascents, etc). However, I have experienced brief vertigo on two dives, and I feel a little woozy for a minute or two when I get out of the water sometimes. I dive a dry suit with latex seals which were pretty tight at first, and I figured the slight wooziness was caused by the neck seal reducing blood flow.

I had a problem with sinus squeeze during my first 20 or so dives, but Afrin seemed to help. I've since stopped using decongestants, and I never have problems equalizing. I equalize early and often on descents.

The lightheadedness seems to have gotten steadily more persistent over the past two months, but I don't have any other symptoms. My blood pressure and heart rate are normal, and I can do moderate cardio exercise without getting winded or having the lightheadedness worsen.

I understand that advice presented here is "educational." My objective is to get information about what could possibly be wrong so I'm a more informed patient when I see the doctor again. My insurance sucks, so I need to maximize every doctor visit!

Also, if you know a good ENT in the Seattle-Tacoma area who is familiar with diving, please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
BlackToe

You might try contacting DAN for a recommendation of a diving physician in your area.

Funny how that never occurred to me. I'll blame it on the lightheadedness! I am a DAN member, but I tend to forget all the non-emergency services they offer. Thanks for the reminder!

If all else fails ...lay off the ganja

Ganja. That sounds like a cure, not a disease! Sadly, I can say that ganja is definitely not causing my problem. :(

A good eval will need your age, sex, medications, medical history, surgical history, and blood pressure/pulse evaluation. I think it is way beyond this post, DAN, or anyone to assess your situation based on the information provided.

I agree that forums shouldn't be used to assess a medical condition, and I would never substitute information on the web for a visit to the doctor. I was just hoping to hear someone say, "I had a similar problem once, and it turned out to be ____." That way I can have as much information as possible when I talk to the doctor.

Just like the rest of us, doctors don't know everything. Sometimes it helps to prod them a little by asking "could it be _____?"

I've requested a diving physician referral from DAN. The GP's kinda give you the deer-in-the-headlights look when you start talking about diving.

"I had a similar problem once, and it turned out to be ____."

A small brain tumor.....

My twin brother....

A BB...

A small brain aneurysm....

A parasitic tapeworm cyst....

An infectious abcess...

A space alien ...

Just kidding.... Merry Xmas...

I didn't say that we can't comment on your case, but you left out pertinent information about yourself.

Fill in those blanks, and pehaps the 3 or 4 physicians here can comment more.

Age: 35
Sex: As often as possible. Er, I mean, Male
Height: 5'-11"
Weight: 170
Medications: None
Medical/Surgical History: The only major things are a fractured shoulder and jaw surgery about 15 years ago
Blood Pressure: We have a wrist BP monitor that I use from time to time. I'm almost always 110-120 over 70-80, with a pulse usually under 60 bpm.

I'm not about to join an Iron Man or anything, but I'm in relatively decent shape.

DAN sent me three diving physician referrals, so I'll probably make an appointment with one when I get back from Arizona in a week. I know "lightheadedness" is pretty vague, but if any of you doctors out there can comment, it'll help me cover all the bases with the doctor.

We have a saying that applies here: Can't hurt, might help!
