Hi,

Any recos for dive operators in the perhentians. Im a single traveller (OWD)looking to go around june/july.

Cheers

Aravind

I guess I'm partial to Watercolours, as I worked there last season and will work there again this June through August.

Have heard good things about Sunshine too, where are you located, or what island are you staying on.

Hi

What's the marine life like on sites around the islands? I was thinking of a trip there my self. Are there any palegics around and is the sea life abundant?

Thanks
Iain-le

The Perhentian Islands are a small group of beautiful, coral-fringed islands off the coast of northeastern Malaysia in the state of Terengganu, not far from the Thai border.

The Perhentians offer some great diving and excellent snorkeling. In addition to coral and fish, the Perhentians are home to sea turtles and many species of shark -none of them dangerous unless provoked though.

Visibility is usually in the 10 meter range (although it will temporarily go down after storms, as well as during the end-of-year monsoon seasons) and no wet suit is required, although you may wish to use a dive skin for protection from coral and the occasional jellyfish.

Looking for the : Airlines and cheap flight deals .

I've been there 10 days ago and dove with Watercolours. I really enjoyed my stay (dives, briefings, and food) with them and the diving experience there.

Lots of colors, lots of aquatic life (tons of box fish, puffers, sharks, turtles, ...) and very nice visibility (10 to 20m at the surface but most of the time not so good after 15m except at "the Temple of the Sea").

In addition, it's been very nice to get on the dive sites after just a 10 minutes speed boat ride :)

I may recommend a full body 2 ~ 3mm wet suit as after a 1 hour + dive you may get a little bit cold (I was definetly cold with my 5mm but got a cold during my train trip from Thaïland to Malaysia ...)

How many sharks did you see on a typical dive? What was the most you saw? What species? When I dived there we saw quite a few blacktip sharks, incuding a lot of juveniles; is that still the case? Where is the best place to stay, cost no object? Thanks.

Mostly depends of the dive site, but you can expect to see lots (20+) of Bamboo Sharks at Tokong Laut (aka "Temple of the Sea"), a few of them at the Sugarwreck, and a few Black Tip reef sharks at the Lighthouse. If you're lucky, you may also spot some Coral Cat Sharks, as lazy & shy as the Bamboos but with a very nice shape & colors :)
