Came across this board just recently and really liked what I have read so far.

As I am planning a three to four weeks trip in mid January I was wondering what the conditions in the Perenthian Islands are going to be viz & weather. As I cannot take time off any other time, the question is whether it is absolutely a no-go / no-dive area or just not the best time of the year.

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

The east coast of Malaysia will be closed until after February for the monsoon. That means no ferries will be going to Perhentian. It will practically be a deserted island. Tioman tends to open a bit earlier. So try your luck there in January. But it's not likely.
