I am contemplating getting one of these. My question is is there a screen protector for them? If not, how scratch resistant are they? Can you replace the screen cover if scratched? I'd hate to lay down 700-800$ only to get something that scratches. I'm pretty anal about trying to keep my stuff as nice as possible.

Yes, very, and yes. Extras are $5.

You can get screen protectors at divegearexpress.com

They come with a screen protector in place, which last a long time. Scratches are more likely to occur on the raised edges than the screen itself.

I've been known to do a little bit of cave diving, which can be hard on your gear. I bought a Petrel in December 2013 and it's held up pretty well. I don't use a screen protector, but I do turn my gauges in towards my body.

Thanks everyone. As for the raised edges comment, that is actually what made me think of this question because it appears the Perdix does not have the raised edges that the petrel 2 does which made me think the Perdix would be more vulnerable to face scratches than the petrel. I am heavily leaning towards the Perdix as I have no need for CCR capabilities. I am actually not even tech trained yet. My path is heading towards technical training (likely next summer not this summer). I love how the screen of the Shearwaters are bigger and the colors are nice and bright. That is one of the main reasons for getting it. yes I know it is over kill for simple recreational diving.

The Perdix can do CCR deco, just not real time monitoring.

The main reason I love them is that they work and they use AA batteries, which are cheap and readily available.

thanks for the correction about CCR. I just meant I will likely never be going CCR anyways so that point is not driving me one way or another. I like the slimmer design of the Perdix over the Petrel and the longer battery life. I also like the idea of the double O-ring. It is not needed but hey, it is added security.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using this computer for rec diving. heck I wish I could afford one myself!!
If it's good for Tech, it'S definitely good for rec.

I use a Petral for all my diving and teaching. Both recreational parameters and technical. It is an awesome computer. :)
