We went to Pensacola Beach to play some volleyball with friends but had the gear in the car so we could hit Ft.Pickens afterwards but our friends were running late so we decided to swim out to the mysterious rubble that we had heard was covered. We aligned ourselves with the bathrooms and started the swim out to pillar 16, as we got there we seen some dark shadows appear below us... Tom and I both popped our heads up in excitement and exclaimed "ITS HERE!" and both of us took a deep breath and went under.

When we got down to the bottom (about 13ft) we found a very large fish (bigger than anything we've seen around Ft.Pickens for sure) but have no idea what it was, it kind of looked like a nurse shark but was silver, so not really sure. We couldn't investigate too much since we aren't very good free divers :P

After a few more freediving attempts we decided that volleyball wasn't that fun and ran to the car and geared up. We were so excited that we barely noticed the hike from the parking lot to the water!

There is all kinds of micro-marine life down there which made a great dive! We saw a lot of blenny's, sand divers, spiked puffer fish, crabs, spades and more.

We did have some fisherman that were yelling at us from the pier about being too close to their lines but there wasn't a single line anywhere near the rubble, so not sure where they think they were casting but it wasn't that far :P

Cool, the dudes at MBT said it was uncovered and a great dive again. Glad to get a report on it.

Sounds like most of the beach stuff is opening up... 'bout damned time.

Any recent reports on this site? It seems to have been forgotten with the emergence of the Portofino site but it still is a good place for an easy afternoon dive when the tidal conditions make the jetties undesirable.

No idea on current conditions, but its a great little dive, especially at night. I've seen jewfish, sharks, and huge turtles out there. Its amazing what that rubble and those pilons bring in as far as life.
