Given that there's generally considered to be two basic types of divers, those that pee in their wetsuits and those that lie, which is why I bought a full suit before my first cold water dive, being only willing to rent shorties, what about those of us who just can't seem to go under pressure?

This seems to be a recent thing, I'm sure I've gone in a wetsuit before, but this summer I found it impossible, even just standing in waist deep water waiting for others exiting from a shore dive (despite there being toilets on land, sometimes every second of discomfort matters!). Noticed it on planes, too, even though they're at lower than normal pressure - incredibly unpleasant on, say, 12 hour flights! I was thinking for a while it might be from the weights (not using a weight integrated BCD), until I remembered the plane stuff, too.

I was drinking plenty of water (obviously, as I have to go so damn bad!), has my bladder just become unusually shy somehow? Or decided that not offending anyone else overrides its duty to its owner?

It's a well-known phenomenon that when you WANT to go, or TRY to go, it is more difficult. Most often noticed when you get into a crowded bathroom at a sports arena and there are 4 men in line behind you.

Obviously you need to relax. And here's the trick--take your mind off the impending action by doing some math problems in your head; this has worked every single time for me, hope it does as well for you.

When diving, I also need to stop kicking for a moment to get the needed relaxation response.

Hehe, you don't give profile info, not even gender, but I think I can safely say: "Welcome to middle-ages, Sir. Now get your prostate examined. :D

Or if I am wrong, my apologies ma'am.

That would be ma'am, last I checked anyhow, and as I've occasionally worked for a urologist in the past, had I been a male of that age, that would have been my first guess, too. ;-)

As for the being more relaxed part, I'm not sure what would make me more stressed on planes recently than I was a couple years ago (after 9/11 then, too), and I've tried the "stop kicking"/hide behind some coral/etc...also, with the water being significantly cleaner and less icky overall than the land bathrooms at the sites in question, you'd think my brain might be able to convey to my bladder that it's actually the preferred location, which is why my only guess was pressure changes.

If I went into a crowded bathroom and had 4 men in line behind me, I don't think I'd be sticking around long enough to use it. ;-)

O ok, sorry - you might add that to your profile...?

I dunno'? I too will stop moving and rest on the sand for a relieving break, but the saftey stop is my real unloading time!

I can understand that.
