OK, I now know that whenever one takes a car or truck out in Bonaire, it should be left unlocked and nothing more valuable than a safety pin should be left in the car. But what about overnight parking at the lodging place? Of course nothing is left in the car but should it be left unlocked overnight as well?

I am staying at Blachi Koko Apartments. They told me that they have parking in front of the house. Does this mean parking on the street or do they have American motel style parking within the property?

If there is nothing in the truck, then why consider locking it? Truck theft is not a problem. If someone intends to steal a truck by hot-wiring the ignition, a door lock is not going to stop them. A door lock can often be defeated with nothing more than a couple of hand tools and some brute force. I would not hesitate to leave the truck unlocked (and empty) overnight at my place of lodging.

Parking is out front but if the truck itself gets stolen there's not too many places they can hide it...lol.

The storm drain in the left corner of this shot is the main street thru downtown Kralendijk so it's usually pretty busy until later at night. People walk downtown from the Divi area across the street to restaurants near Karel's Bar/Zee Zicht/Ribs Factory. There's also about 1/2 dozen others you'd pass along that walk. Most are partially outdoors.

Do they have anight watchman? - some properties do. Ours did so we left the windows down.

I am renting a small car, not a truck. I have booked with VIP Diving who are around the corner and so we will go to the dive sites in their truck. The car is for the visit to East Coast diving with Bonaire East coast Divers and to go to restaurants, shops etc. I'll follow the "don't lock / Don't leave items" policy.

I just was not sure about what to do at night but guess you guys have answered my question. I will leave the car unlocked.

Blachi Koko do not have a night watchman as far as I know. I think their parking space is probably very similar to what is in the above photo. It is in front of the house, as they said.

Our rental place had parking on the street and they told us to lock the car and close the windows for overnight parking. So we did.

You must do what the rental agency tells you to do. If they say you're responsible for damages if you roll up the windows and lock the truck then you know not to do it, simple as that.

I'm wondering when the rental agencies will start ordering their rental vehicles without windows or door locks so they can buy their vehicles cheaper.

A nice design for a dive-customized pickup truck might omit doors altogether, and have floor drains so they could just be cleaned with a water hose.

Nice.

How about some customized VW things! All the cool kids used to take the doors off of them.

Leave a truck out exposed to the salt water spray long enough and nature will take care of that...

who says you can't clean it with a water hose if it has doors and no floor drains?
