IIRC, whether you have to stop (decompress) is a function of how long you've been at depth. 30ft is shallow enough where you're likely to empty a single tank before you hit the no-deco limit, so as long as you go up slowly you should be ok.

Technically, for no-deco recreational diving, the "required" 3-minute safety stop at 15ft isn't strictly required (it's strongly suggested, but if a problem occurs, you blow the safety stop without sweating it.

If I'm wrong about any of this, the flames will be visible for miles I'm sure.

Wait until you take the class, though. There is a golden rule we have to stop at either 15 or 20ft for 3 mins to degas for the safety of mind; however, it's depends on your diving plan and gas. What I am saying here is not enough. I am glad that you finally decided to take class(es) in November.

There are alot of people who have been diving for years and never been certified. But it is a good idea to get ahold of some of the physics which will make you more aware of why we don't hold our breaths, as well as other things. It also provides knowledge on the physiological aspects of diving. If you have a good instructor he or she will give you good information that will make diving safer for you....
