I've been to the Maldives, Palau, and Indonesia in the past 18 months.

Palau LOB over the New Year
Indonesia (Banda Sea) LOB in October

We were looking for schooling hammerheads during Indonesia cruise. We saw 2 sharks during the 11-day cruise. Two.

Palau
-A lot of time hooked on bare current-swept walls watching sharks. Sharks everywhere.
-Mantas
-World War 2 wrecks and historical sites on Peleliu
-Warm water (shorts and rash guard)
-Very clean island
-Jellyfish Lake is no longer a destination, another victim of global warming

Indonesia
-Very, very pretty reefs
-Rare sharks
-Rare mantas
-Colder water 3mm suit 78-80 F
-Classic 3rd world poverty & filth

The Maldives definitely has stronger currents than either Palau or Indonesia. But I saw no real difference between the current around Palau and Indonesia.

I travel from the D.C. area. Travel to Palau and Indonesia was about the same in time, cost, and difficulty.
