The PADI organization has become a major sponsor of Make A Hero's new film project, The Current, narrated by Jean-Michel Cousteau and starring professional surfer Bethany Hamilton (from the movie Soul Surfer), 2012 Paralympic Gold Medalist Mallory Weggemann, college wrestling national champion Anthony Robles, professional surfer Taylor Knox, Afghan war veteran Jesse Murphree and Hollywood executive Rick Finkelstein.
This diverse cast shares two things all have overcome physical disabilities and all possess the inner strength and drive to pursue their dream of scuba diving. Joined by Olympic gold medalist swimmer Missy Franklin, an athlete ambassador in support of Make A Hero, The Current chronicles the adventures of this group as they conquer their next challenge and experience the wonders of the underwater world.
Directed by Kurt Miller and Peter Speek, The Current is the second film in an inspirational series created by Make A Hero, an organization that helps individuals with disabilities gain freedom of movement through sports and recreation. Make a Hero's first film, The Movement, narrated by Robert Redford and Warren Miller, captured the triumphs of individuals as they transformed their disabilities from limitations into character strengths through downhill skiing. With breathtaking cinematography and poignant, personal stories, the film was accepted in more than 20 film festivals, including Sundance, and received seven Maverick Movie awards nominations. The film has also inspired more than three million viewers in its first year.
Now, the PADI organization is helping Make A Hero bring this same freedom of movement and cinematographic beauty underwater. In The Current, new divers, with and without disabilities, will explore the wonders of the underwater realm. From diving with whales and wild dolphins to learning from Jean-Michel Cousteau, viewers join the journey as participants overcome obstacles and learn about themselves as they learn to dive. The Current will capture the magic of movement through water and the transformational effects it has on the human spirit.
