If a 10 year old took the Padi Jr. open water course does he become Open Water certified when he turns 15 or does he have to take the course again? Thanks.

My understanding of it is you would just need to send in the form to get a new card without the Jr. on it. I believe the only difference with a Jr. card is who they can dive with, with a Jr they have to dive with a guardian or a PADI Pro diver. The training is the same for JR as regular Open Water

The other difference between a Jr Open Water and Open Water diver is the depth restriction. They recommend that Jr Open Water Divers stay at 60ft and above.

Rather than getting a new openwater card, progress through diving by taking your advance open water. By doing so you will gain the expierience of diving in a diversity of areas under the supervision of an instructor. Also when completed, if your over 15 now, you will get a regular AOW card. Or just let the dive boat shop etc know your over 15 and you are qualified as an openwater diver most boats realise its just an age restriction.

Better yet, do the Junior Advanced Open Water, Junior Rescue and Junior Master Scuba Diver at 12 and then replace the Jr MSD card at 15. Or, what the heck, it's only money. Replace them all. Keep the Junior versions as mementos. In fact, give the obsolete versions to the grandparents that paid for the program.

I need to find out what specialties are available at 12 to obtain the Junior MSD. It's not clear to me which count toward MSD and which can be taken by Junior Rescue divers. I'll get into it in a couple of years when my grandson turns 12.

It's a shame the 10 year old JOW diver doesn't have any opportunities for additional training until they are 12. If there are opportunities, my LDS is not aware of them! My grandson may rack up a bunch of dives but I would rather he take more classes. Education is the key to this sport.

Hi Richard,

I can't speak for your agency (NAUI, according to your profile), but if your grandson is/were trained by PADI, there is additional training available for 10-year-olds.
A PADI LDS could check the table on pages 13-15 in the General Standards and Procedures section of the Instructor Manual.

All specialties now count toward Master Scuba Diver, none of the specialties require Rescue as a prerequisite.

No minimum age:
Coral Reef Conservation
Emergency First Response
Project AWARE Specialist

Minimum age of 10 for:
Junior Adventure Diver
Altitude Diver
Boat Diver
Digital Underwater Photographer
Dry Suit Diver
Equipment Specialist
Fish Identification Diver
National Geographic Diver
Peak Performance Buoyancy
Underwater Naturalist
Underwater Navigator
Underwater Photographer
Underwater Videographer

Minimum age of 12 for:
Junior Advanced Open Water Diver
Junior Rescue Diver
Junior Master Scuba Diver
Diver Propulsion Vehicle Diver
Drift Diver
Multilevel Diver
Night Diver
Search and Recovery Diver

Minimum age of 15 for:
Removal of term "junior"
Deep Diver
Enriched Air Diver
Semiclosed Rebreather Diver
Wreck Diver

Minimum age of 18 for:
Cavern Diver
Ice Diver
DiveMaster and beyond, with some levels (starting at Master Instructor) requiring age 20 or 21.

best wishes

Thanks for the info! I am certified with NAUI (back in '88) but my grandson is with PADI. I'm going to go over your list and talk to the LDS.

He got certified in mid-November and I would very much like him to take additional classes this summer. Boat diving is certainly a candidate as is Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Navigator and even Equipment Specialist. I'm not terribly interested in Fish Indentification, Naturalist, Photographer or Videographer. However, if he's interested, we'll see...

Thanks for posting the list. It will be a best seller around here.

Richard

Junior MSD at 12, aye caramba.

Don't forget the PADI Seal Team (aged 8). My son starts his next Saturday. He couldn't wait until he turned 10.

Specialties list is a bit odd. Can't imagine stuffing a 10 year old into a drysuit, but equally, can't see any compelling reason why they shouldn't be allowed to use a DPV.
