Could someone recommend an excellent dive center to do my PADI IDC? I was thinking Cairns but am open to suggestions. I would like to do it sometime before December of this year.

Thanks for any advice!

I used to run IDC up there every 2 months. PADI schedule IEs every few months so the programs are set around these.
Other palces may not have IEs set for the time you want to do it, so look at you rtime frame.
I dont et involved any more as I odnt have the time, but I can cerainly help you out. Too much to write it al here so drop me a private line of you want and will recommend a few CDs I know well and use to refer inquiries to.
Cairns is great as it has nice easy water etc and the IDC will always run with reasonable sized groups.
But as summer is coming anywhare shoudl be good.
Theres some great Course Directors in Sydney and in Victoria too.

G'day Waterwabbit.. Love ya name...

My name is Carl Fallon. I am the Professional Development Manager here at Abyss Scuba Diving. I work with all the IDC candidates and PADI Internship students here in Sydney. If you have any questions at all about the course and examination process, just drop me a PM.

We run IDC's through out the year and have one running on the 19th of October. PADI Asia Pacific sets the dates for the Instructor Exams each year, so the next one after that is on the 11th of January - 2010/ The October course we have candidates from all over the globe, Spain, England, and obviously OZ as well.

You should check out a video i put together from the last IDC we ran... The course was great fun, and every passed the IE. The examiner said that they all did brilliantly.

Check it out: YouTube - Dive Instructor Training in Sydney _ www.abyss.com.au

Good luck with your training waterwabbit and if there is anything i can do to help just let me know.

I am also looking to do an IDC in December or January. My biggest problem is that I won't have a huge amount of leave available from work so am looking to do an IDC that is not overly drawn out. I was also thinking Cairns although I am from NSW Central Coast. Any reccommendations would be great!

What to IDC candidates generally do regarding accommodation for the duration of the IDC and IE?
Do most dive operators have their own accommodation available at a cost?

One of the CDs in Cairns, Keith Cardwell, comes over to NZ to do some IDCs for one of the dive shops here.

A friend of mine did their IDC with Keith in NZ and had no complaints. I've met him several times, and he seems a really nice guy. Another friend travelled to Aus to do n IDC with Keith, and he went above and beyond. Google "Keith Cardwell" and you'll find his contact details.

Generally an IDC has to run for a minimum of 7 days. This is an incredibly short time, and most of us Course directors run them for 9 or 10 days to give the time available to practice. Remember it is a big jump to Instructor and you really don’t want a course that is going to rush it.

I don’t have the time to run IDCs anymore but am happy to help out where I can. Personally I would make sure you look at a course that is small numbers and going to give you the good sessions in open and confined water. For example some CDs (and I am not going to name names here) save money by running the open water segment in a fresh water swimming hole. Great if that is where you are going to teach. Most of us teach in the sea, so go to someone who runs the open water in the sea.

You will get what you pay for so ask questions and look at forums like these for help too.

Accommodation is up to teh individual. In Cairns there are plenty of places, but dont go to hostles where they part on al lnight, as you will need space and quiet to prepare the lessons for the next day. I used to get my guys into Cairns Share House which are units that travellers share in town. Google it.

G'day guys, :cool2:

Just thought i would post some info on the schedule of the Sydney based IDCs running in the next few months to help you out.

To become an PADI Instructor from PADI DM there are 3 main things that you need to do.
  • Instructor Development Course
  • Instructor Examination (IE), and
  • now the Emergency First Response Instructor Course (EFRI).
The IDC is usually the first thing for you attend. Our IDC program runs from Monday through to Monday (7 days straight) for full time candidates. Part time IDC's run over 3 weeks (Sat - Sun, Sat - Sun, Fri - Sat - Sun - Mon.)

We also offer a free optional IDC preparation program that runs for 2 days prior to the IDC (Sat and Sun). We head to the pool and run through all the skills circuit to help refresh you for the IDC. We then run a simulated IE theory day, to pin point any gaps in your knowledge so that you study them in prep for your IE.

You also need to now be Emergency First Response Instructor certified to start teaching as a PADI Instructor. So we run the EFRI program between the IDC and the IE. The EFRI is a two day program and is usually run on the Wednesday and Thursday.

The Instructor Examination takes a full weekend. You will sit theory exams on the friday night on the north side of the city. On the Saturday you will go to the pool and also present a classroom presentation in the morning. Sunday you will hit the ocean (Usually Shelly Beach at Manly) and present some ocean skills and get a quick check of your rescue skills. At the end of the day you will be a PADI Instructor! :D Hopefully. hehehe...

The IDC's and EFRI's are schedule in around when PADI schedules their Examinations. So, we have a IDC and EFRI running between the 11th - 18th of January.

Check out:
Dive Instructor - PADI IDC Course - Abyss Scuba Diving for more course datails.

We have our own Course Director who is the Director of the company, 2 Full Time PADI Master Instructors (me included) and 4 Full Time PADI IDC Staff Instructors. We are all on hand, even out of hours, to run through skills with you, to help you review your dive theory and basically help you in any way to make you confident when entering into your IE.

PADI awarded us their "Most Outstanding PADI Dive Centre in Asia Pacific" (The only NSW dive centre to ever receive this award) so I can guarentee you professional and thorough training which will give you the best start to your professional career.

Accommodation during your IDC in Sydney
For our candidates that require accommodation we use a great guesthouse in Cronulla. It has been recently renovated, and you even get cooked breakfasts and two course dinners. It isn't your usual questhouse (ie not a backpacker bunk house) and is quite and clean, which is perfect for when you are studying for your examinations.

The cost is low at $150/week twin share, and $220/week single share and it includes the meals. If you fly into Sydney for your course and dont have a car, we offer daily transfers to and from the accommodation for the duration of your program.

I hope this has helped you guys plan for your Instructor program. If you need any more help please dont hesitate in droping me a message. I hope to be involved with your Instructor Training, and would like to wish you all the best with your examinations.

Cheers guys...:D
