Hey all...for those of you who have taken the class (or teach the class), is the PADI Equipment Specialist Cert worth my time?

It all comes down to who is teaching it and how much detail they go into. The best bet is to ask the instructor what will be taught and to what detail level. Then you can make the decision if you want to take it.

With the right instructor it can be a great class.

I think you'd do better to buy the Oxyhacker book and read it.

Sure it's worth it.

Equipment Specialist is an introductory course designed to teach you how the equipment works, and for you to get some hands on experience with a technician. If you want to learn to service your equipment, that can be arrainged by attending a certification seminar.

I found it to be pretty much useless, It was more of a sales pitch. Most of the class involved going over basics you were taught in OW, and then passing around the newest equipment the dive shop had in an attempt to sell. BUT I got a pretty little card out of the deal!

Mine was great! Like AZ said it depends on the instructor..The guy that ran mine took it to another level! We did annual service snd tuned up a reg, did VIP on a cylinder, learned a little about gas blending, did service on a Zeagle BC etc. I think we were in the shop for like 6-8 hours!

I took mine 2 weeks after finishing OW and it was awesome. It was very beneficial to take it so early as it taught me a great deal more about diving equipment than is covered in OW. It was invaluable when it came to researching what type of equipment to purchase. Just make sure to talk to the instructor first. I'd highly recommend that you take it from a very experienced instructor who, if possible, is also involved in equipment repair. My instructor was both and that IMO is what made the course so valuable.

I found it to be a good course. I've had to troubleshoot & field repair some of my equipment. I've had my HP hose come loose & pop an O- ring, broken fin & mask straps, Changed tank O- rings & things like that. It basically has saved more than a few dives. Worth it in my book.
