PADI Elearning and my local dive center

an LDS by me charges $185 for the course (including materials & card) for 1 student - and 4 hours of classroom with a GOOD instructor -- dives not required but avail.

I just received an email from the dive center saying they charge $150 for their portion of the class so now the price is $360. I've tried to explain to them that all I need is the "hands on portion" but they insist that the price is $150 for that part. This is on top of what PADI gives them out of my original $210.

Find another shop. Seriously. I did the TDI basic Nitrox online for $119, I think. Lots of shops/instructors offer it as an "add-on" to OW for free or nominal cost. $200+ is way too expensive.

If I list a dive center when I sign up for an elearning class, like Nitrox, does the dive center get any of the money or does it all go to PADI? $210 seems way too much to pay for a Nitrox class online and then have to pay my local center to do their part.

sounds like a big rip off..they do the minimum required-no dives-and charge you more over the elearning cost..We are in NY, Westchester, one of the most affluent,if not the most ,affluent area of the country with high rents for store space and we charge absolutely nothing once student aligns themselves with us through elearning.

My SEI/TDI Nitrox class is 145.00 for the whole shooting match including 2 dives. That's 4-6 hours of class room, books, and card. This is the full class with all calculations and use of tables. Not set your computer to this and jump in. If you do the TDI on line portion for 120.00 or so I charge 25.00 to go over the necessary items and do a couple dives if you choose to. The only extra cost is the rental of your two tanks if you choose to do the dives. If not then no need to do that. I have a couple tanks mixed up that I will use in the future that you will analyze. $210.00 is outright sodomy. Another 150.00 on top of that? They're fracturing your skull and leaving you for dead.

The shop that I work out of charges 79.00 for the class plus books.

The dive shop gets 30-40% I believe of the relearning course. Unfortunately, it is up to each dive shop how they want to charge for the "hands on" portion. I agree, $150 is to much for the "hands-on" portion. I recommend you talk to them again or you find a PADI instructor who does not belong to a dive shop or another dive shop who will do it for cheaper. And also we don't charge Nitrox we give that class away. All we do is charge for the books and the pic. It's unfortunate, but people charge a lot of money for the Nitrox or deep specialties that are in high demand and people want.

I was quoted around $150 for the dive shop portion and then would have to buy the online lessons from PADI so it was quite steep. I found an SSI shop and they were much more reasonable and I was impressed with the classroom training I got- it was a lot more than just showing I could analyze a tank.
