PADI Diving Society?

Does anyone belong to this? It appears that you're not a member of the "society" unless you sign up and pay $29 anually. As far as I can tell, its just a fancy name for a magazine subscription. See https://secure.palmcoastd.com/pcd/document?ikey=18901HF5A .

Can anyone provide any feedback one way or the other. Besides getting another magazine, which I don't mind, are there any other substantial benefits?

I've been a member for several years. Part of the $29 does go to the subscription to Sport Diver, but the rest goes to several coupons listed in their annual directory of dive shops. It's purely personal preference.

I really like the mag. Also, Dive insurance is cheaper from them if you belong to the society.

There are some other benefits
if you take the specialty of the month course there is a monthly giveaway
there are some trips that they sponser
but pretty much it is the magazine, which does have some good info.

It's not a bad magazine, but it is a little biased, but that's to be expected. Scuba Diving magazine is just as bad though...


If you don't join, you can still buy the magazine at your bookstore (or at least mine carries it. ) or check your LDS. Mines gives it away as a freebie!

If you want the Speciality of the month and the monthly giveaway that goes with it, anyone can get that regardless of membership. You can get on some email distribution list that sends info about that every month.

It's a common practice at most dive shops...
