To date I only have bought one piece of my dive gear and that was my BCD. After getting the cost of the unit from my LDS I did a "sanity" check with a few online retailers and found it was very competative. I dont think there would have been an amount (within reason) that I would have gone on line for it nor would I attempt to negociate a few nickles off because I found it on line for $25 cheeper. I dont work that way and I hope this will keep the LDS from padding prices to allow for me wanting to bargin. That is just me though some people live for that sort of thing. I also admit I am a newbe and know little and would feel like a sleeze if I needed them to help me with something I did not buy there. If I did think it seemed too much I would tell the LDS so, but tell them I am gonna take it either way but if there is some wiggle room lets talk about it. This takes the pressure off gives the seller an out. You would be suprised how many times this succeeds, and neither side has to be the "bad guy".

The BCD I did buy was a BP/W (DiveRite Transplate) and I found that I disliked the tank fit. So I bought a STA from a member here. I wanted Stainless Steel but I did not want to pay the $70-$100 diverite wanted and I did not like what it looked like either espically for the cost. Now the one I bought from the member here (The Kracken) was a work of art and it was half the price. I am not losing sleep over that. I understand the price is not the LDS's fault but I think it worth while and I think it a better product. Also the LDS and I never had an STA conversation so I feel no guilt.

If I can get the same thing for half the price for the same unit/quality then I have to at least take a close look. Note I am % driven not $... $50 sounds like a lot untill you realize it is on a $500 BCD. Then it seems like a trivial amount.

That is my take on it this is generally the way I work, it has served me well in both my personal and professional dealings so I dont see how diving will be that different. I guess I am lucky enough that the LDS I use seems to be pretty fair as far as pricing so I have had no soul searching moments thus far.

Just my 2 cents

Okay, bud. First off, the numbers aren't too small to read, otherwise you need glasses REAAALLLY BAD! Sometimes Internet Explorer fits an image into the browser, but that isn't necessarily the size of the image. That image is PLENTY big to read all the numbers, unless you are technically blind.

Second, I'm not one to judge if someone uses a copyrighted work. I've copied an MP3 or two in my time, so I'm not one to judge him. Also, I own my DCIEM table, but I've looked at others more for reference, out of curiousity. I like having them available for such purposes. Would I buy the PADI RDP? Nope. Do I use it for diving? Nope.

Should he buy a proper table? Probably. Does it hurt to check out a few to see the differences, and then decide which to buy? Nope.

1st - I'll have you know I have the best pair of glasses that Fred's dollar store sells ($5.00).

2nd - aren't you worried that the MP3 police are watching . . . they are you know . . . they can get you.

Wayward Son already said it.... there should be one in your PADI adventure kit...

You can order everything separate from PADI. Some stores take the crew packs apart and sell separately too.

PADI doesn’t care how you do this as long as its bought from them

Maybe you haven't heard, but we're not worried about the MP3 police up here in Canada... It's the Americans that are getting busted... not Canadians. Our courts have protected us.

For a few extra you can buy the PADI ERDP...looks like a calculator.

If you are so cheap as to not want to purchase dive tables GET OUT OF DIVING

Ron

So far I have to disagree. Diving has been a rather cheap sport. Sure, there is a high initial cost, but after that, it's damn cheap.

Let's see $1500 for gear, $35 for scuba club membership (with free air). Now, lets see, cost per dive is now $0. Okay, there is some yearly maintenance and stuff, but as far as sports go, this is looking freaking cheap long term.

When I started running, I thought that would be a cheap sport. However, having to buy shoes every 800km sure adds up when you start marathon training. At $140/pair of shoes, and shoes only last approximately 8 weeks, that's (52/8)*$140 = $910/year on freak'n shoes. Never mind race entries and increase in food consumption.

There aren't many cheap sports these days that are cheap. I'm currently considering Scuba one of them though -- well, unless you require a boat to dive (e.g. local conditions may vary).

$1500 for gear? That doesn't even pay for my drysuit.

Show off! :D

Let's see $175 for used wetsuit, hood, gloves, and booties.
$250 for new AL80.
$1000+tax for new BCD, gauges, regs, and lead.
$120 for fins.

Okay, it's a bit over $1500.

Already had mask. Got a light for x-mas. Then just have to add a little bit for the knife. That's about it though, except for tid bits here and there.
