PADI college credits?

PADI advertises that PADI courses are elligable for college credit. Anybody done this? How many credits is each level worth? Thanks in advance.

Yes PADI courses can be used as college credit to satisfy a kinesiology credit. The credit is usually 1 hour but most institutions only require 2 hours kinesiology. I did my PADI OW while in college so I didn't have to worry about transfering the credit, it was all in my tuition. You may want to contact the organization for transfer information. I also believe that NAUI offers a simular credit. I say this because the local college here offers OW and AOW but the LDS (now offering NAUI and PADI instruction) does the work, school just recognizes the work.

I took both OW and AOW through school. I took them at a junior college. Each class is worth two credit hours and are easy A's. If nothing else, it is a good way to pad your GPA.

Just a thought, what would it take to get an AS in SCUBA?

I teach a university scuba class worth one unit. The school doesn't care what agency I certify them through.

You're going to have to talk to your registrar. Where I am, the scuba class can get you one PE credit, maybe another if you do advanced. I never even bothered trying to get my IDC to count towards anything since my school did not even recognize all my AP credits. I would not expect more than one credit, based on a 4 point system, to be given for scuba.

Unless you did your classes through your University/College, your PADI classes will be accepted as transfer credit... meaning that no GPA will be given, and they're likely to fall in the "elective credit" gray zone.

In most cases, the 1 or 2 credits you'll gain from it are useless, and not worth the paperwork/fees associated with it.

I suppose if you were really desperate for a couple elective credits... however that's usually not an issue for University students (I've yet to meet one that can't graduate because they're a couple elective credits short, usually they're elective heavy, and missing a core required class).

I see this as another one of PADI's enticements that have little or no actual value, just a perceived "nifty" factor.

I had a dive shop near a university and we tried for years to get the school to put diving in the catalog and offer credits for it. That would have helped me by letting kids use student loan money...lots of kids walking in wanting to dive who couldn't afford it.

When the school finally did consider offering diving I was told that to teach for them you needed to have a graduate degree so that let me out. I think a former student of mine ended up teaching it. I don't know what kind of instructor she turned out to be (well I do but it doesn't matter) but she has a PHD in something. Oh well.
