A buddy of mine has a PADI "C-card" issued in 1986. It has three numbers on it, a student number, an instructor number and a trained by number. There is no type of cert listed such as OW.

Which of these numbers would be the PADI certification number?

Did PADI have different certs in those days?

thanks

In 1986, PADI issued Open Water as their entry level card. In 1985, the entry level card was Basic. The switch was in January 1986 with the adoption of industry wide minimum standards.

The certification number would be the student number. The trained by number is probably the store or resort number. Hopefully the instructor number is self explanitory.

It should have the words "Open Water Diver" or "Basic Scuba Diver" on there somewhere.

Any Dive Master or higher or diving center can access, by giving name and birth date on their Inernet site, what level of certification any person certified with PADI has.

Thanks for the good info. I sort of had that instructor number figured out!!!! :)

And PADI will look yours up in just a few minutes if you give them a call....

So will YMCA. I know this because I recently needed duplicate cards in a shorter-than-normal time.

Both agencies looked it up while I was on the phone.
