Hi
just posting my 4 cents on PADI being quick and fast. I do agree i have seen lots of quick certifications in Qld,Aust in this time i'm here. It's the tourists market that lots of operators try to target on. But i have also seen very very responsible instructors that are good, stringent and patient teach divers wanna be in a reasonable time frame of 2 days with the theory and video done at home.

I also seen my referral instructor for OW did his class of 20 in 5 days. It was really impressive seeing these people do their job well and good. So i think agencies are there to set the guidelines, outlines for courses...

But i think as divers and instructors should adopt the attitude to teach students about safety. I had instructors from PADI that are safety consious. But i like PADI cuz it's diving for fun. It's the only reason that i started on this.. Just like Nike- Just do it. That's a kick in life . We dive for fun.

Cheers to fun in diving.

Pop quiz--considering you've just finished your DM.

What is the maximum student to instructor ratio for an OW course? I'll give you a hint. It's not 20:1

I'm guessing 4 to 1??

8:1 As bubble blower said. It can be extended slightly with a couple of CA's.

Right now your instructor is biting his finger nails and praying to God for the sake of his career that you don't tell us his name....

Their job is to set the minimums, KNOWING that people will ride the hairy edge of those minimums. You shouldn't have to exceed the minimum to do a good job.

NAUI, SSI, YMCA, and yes, even GUE divers dive for fun, too.
Competence, effort, and real knowledge are not incompatible
with fun; PADI just thinks they are.

Not 20:1 at one time maybe. Certainly not an ideal situation, but 1 instructor can take up to 8 students in the water at a time and teach them in shifts, thereby teaching 20 students in 1 day. You better believe it happens, and often.

Makes me glad I'm not a resort instructor!

I generally work 4:1, one class at a time. Tomorrows class has 6 students in it and I'm bringing an assistant in to maintain sanity.

8 to 1. with 2 additional students per CA up to a max of 12...of course conditions permitting....just becuase you are allowed to take 12 students into the water, doesn't mean should if conditions are poor. use your best judgement.

Yup
I don't have my IM yet but i was guessing it to be 4 cuz my instructor would never have taken 8 in a day with 1 assistant.

It's too many students to check.
