Hi all,

The scuba club I belong to is going to offer an Advanced Open Water class this September and I'm thinking of taking it.

I was wondernig with all is involved? That new things are in the class? What new skills and what dives are required and what is optional?

Thanks for the info,

Jeff

Don't know the certification agency, but P.A.D.I. requires a minimum of 5 adventure dives, of which deep (max 100 fsw. To go to the limits of recreational diving [130fsw] P.A.D.I. requires a deep diving specialty course), and advanced navigation are requirements. The other 3 can be from a multitude of specialties, such as underwater naturalist, boat diving, drift diving, night diving, and so on.

Keep in mind that being AOW certified is in no way Carte Blanche to make advanced dives. You must never dive beyond the limits of your experience and training, and although "trained" in deep water diving, I would suggest you dive well within your experience.

What scubaguy62 said above is correct. Don't think of AOW class as becoming an advanced Diver, but as more advanced topics that OW doesn't cover. It's a program to introduce you to more areas of diving such as Deep, Nav and not to certify you for those diving specialities. If your taking AOW you ought to ask about Nitrox since you can piggy back that along with the class. My dive shop also gave me a discount since I took it along with another speciality.

You should be able to go straight to AOW from OW, but it probably wouldn't hurt to get a little more comfortable with your skills as it is. But as the others have said, it is just an introduction to different areas of diving and experiences under the supervision of an instructor.

If you go to www.padi.com and click on "continue the adventure" then you'll probably answer most of your questions.

I just did my AOW's with P.A.D.I 2 weeks ago. It was a fun weekend of diving. The dives I did were, Boat, Night, Deep, Navigation, Photography. In my opinion underwater navigation should to be part of an "advanced" course. Every diver should be competant in the use of a compass.
