This was always the dilemma we had. We needed a big enough vehicle to get us and our gear to/from the airport, but really didn't need much for transport while on island. Check out McCurley's (mccurley@candw.ky). They'll pick you up at the airport and take you out to East End, where your rental car will be waiting. Their rental cars vary (sometimes they're just about brand new and sometimes they're well worn but serviceable) but you won't be stuck paying for way more than you need for your trip.

Oh, and as others have said, pack the knife in your checked bag.

Have fun!

You don't need full 3mm wetsuits like we had, 1mm neo's (full cover I'd recommend for skin protection).
Get lightweight fins, perhaps rent BC's.

Economy-sized car with ok, for two adult divers with full gear, change of clothes and food for the beach. No room for a third person.

Rental car is expensive, because American/Canadian auto insurance coverage doesn't apply in Grand Cayman. I had a rental "included" with my condo. I took the Avis/Cico full insurance. For 9 days, this added nearly 300$ to the price tag, for economy.

The economy car is smaller than a 2-door American Suzuki Swift if you remember what those were. Smaller than a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris.
The FIT/Yaris is considered a "mid-size" there. A mid-size adds some 7$ per day, and a "full-size" adds close to 15$ above the regular price.

Gas is 5.80 CI per Imperial Gallon, the economy car we had, a full tank was 5.2 gallons.

Car prices are pretty much the same, but the car themselves are different from company to company. For 3 gals with full gear, I'd recommend SUV-sized. So that will cost upwards of 1000$ for the week, plus insurance another 300.

Dive knives you're ok, we had ours attached to our BC's in checked luggage, dive gloves are illegal fyi. With 35 operating dive ops, many with stores, don't worry about dive flags.

Depending how far out East you are, consider booking all your dives with Ocean Frontiers. Out West along 7MB, Cayman Turtle Divers for the personal, non-cattle boat service.

Hi, We are 3 ladies who are going to Grand Cayman in July. It is the first time I will be taking my gear on a flight. We are staying at East End and need to rent a car. I was looking at the cars and I don't know how big a car we need. All 3 of us will have our dive gear. The cheaper cars don't look to have storage. Will there be any place to stow besides the one vacant seat if we get the small 4 seater? From the airport to East End we will have it all with us. Can anyone tell me the minimum size car rental we need and who has the best prices for cars? Can we rent things like dive flags reasonably or should we bring one for shore dives? What do we do about our dive knives. I am not comfortable diving without one. If the dive gear is checked in can I pack my knife? We will be flying Cayman Air out of Tampa. Thanks

Be sure to check your credit cards to see what insurance you might get automatically when using them. On our card, we get international coverage for up to a month when we book and pay for the car with it. It definitely pays to check!

Mind if I ask what card you use? Is that just for C&DW or full liability?

Mine provides full coverage, but it really varies by card and company. My best coverage is through my VISA with my local credit union. My United Mileage Plus Select VISA also provides reasonably good coverage. You'll want to check with each of your own individual credit card companies (i.e., all VISAs are not the same) to verify the specifics since they do vary pretty widely. Also be sure to get the details in writing so you have proof of coverage in case there is any question. In some companies where insurance is mandatory (not Cayman), I've found it's not enough to simply state that you have coverage through your credit card company.

Of course you could always sign up with DAN for insurance.
