I'm looking for some input on this package...

http://www.divers-supply.com/BUILD-A-CUSTOM-SCUBA-PACKAGE-p/pkgcustom.htm

I know its all VERY entry level stuff, but it's really all we, my wife and I, want to spend right now. We already have nice masks, fins, snorkels, and wetsuits, and we are looking at buying this package simply because it would seem better than rental gear, and it would be ours. We could then upgrade as we felt we needed to.

My question is, is it worth it, or is it total junk and are we better off renting? We are obvoiusly new to diving, and really will only dive once or twice a year on vacation, for now at least.

Thanks in advance for any input you have...

Mike

Tusa is a very real brand for the BC but service locations are spotty. Buying a BC off an add like this is a good way to end up with a bag of worms. Trying it out is essential.

SeaElite is a new one to me, surely not a main player but I'll say no more except that local or resort service will be a stretch.

If this is your budget I would suggest a piece meal approach. Go to some local dive shops and test dive (probably in the pool) some BCs that you like. Your budget will get you in into a good BC that will let you have your preferred accessory placement and let you really get a handle on your buoyancy control. Perhaps after renting regulator sets for a year that can be the next investment.

Your profile does not have much info (hint) so I can only guess on this next suggestion. That would be to skip a trip in favor of frequent local diving and complete your outfitting with the money saved.

You are best off to borrow or rent as wide a variety of gear as possible before you decide what to buy. If you buy before you know what works best for you in real world dives you'll wind up owning boxes of gear you don't use and can't sell for anywhere near what you paid.

From one of my websites:

Mike, you need to fill in your profile more so we know where you are from and what kind of diving you do. Sea Elite is the house brand from Divers Supply who purchase it directly from manufacturers in Europe and the Far East. Based on my experience with a wet suit they sell quality products.

You may want to give some of the vendors on scubaboard a try to see if they can put together a package in the same price range. The problem you will have when you upgrade is that very few people know the name Sea Elite and you will get next to nothing for it on ebay.

Also as on of the other posters pointed out, fit is important for a BC. Granted I am sure that Divers Supply will exchange it if you need a large instead of a medium. However, some BC's will just not fit you, medium may be too small and a large too big. That is why it pays to try it on first.

TUSA is fine, buy it, fill out the warranty card, go diving.
